Guitar cases provide an encasing for electric, acoustic, classical, and bass guitars of all sizes. They are designed to protect guitars from scratches, bumps, falls, and dust. Cases usually have a handle or strap to make carrying the instrument easier, and a wide variety of options are offered with each case type.

Soft cases generally have pockets to store extra guitar equipment, like an extra set of strings, a tuner, or extra plectrums. These types of guitar cases are often zippered pouches that have an attached strap to make carrying easier. Soft cases, however, do not provide the same level of protection as hard cases do.

Hard cases provide air-sealed protection. They prevent damage to the instrument if it is dropped or otherwise bumped or jarred. The interior of a hard guitar case is designed to fit the curves of the guitar it is manufactured for. The custom fit can be created through the shape of the case itself or through padding within the case.

Most hard cases contain at least a lining to protect from scratching on the inside of the case. Because of the custom-shaped encasing, most musicians choose a hard case that is manufactured by the same company that manufactured their instrument. Hard guitar cases can have either a strap or a handle for carrying.
