Guitar pedals, also known as pedal boards, are designed to alter the sound of electronic guitars during the preamp stage. This gives each piece of music a sound that is more distinct and unique. Pedals come in a wide variety of types, each producing a different sound alteration. Pedals are most commonly used in rock and metal music, but they can be used with any style of music that employs the sound of an electric guitar or bass.

Guitar pedals are directly plugged into the input terminal of the guitar and then plugged either into a wall or powered by a 9-volt battery. A stomp button turns the pedal on and off.
