Guitar tuners are electronic devices that are often used to help guitar players achieve the proper pitch for each string. A variety of tuners are available, with the most simple providing an indication if the pitch of a single string is too high, too low, or acceptably equal to the desired pitch, and the most complex tuners providing a more precise pitch comparison of one or more strings at a time.
Most simple tuners allow for one string at a time to be tuned. This can be done with an LED light, an LCD, or a needle. The most popular is the LCD. Proper pitch must be set into the tuner. Chromatic tuners, which are more complex tuners, allow all 12 notes to be tuned at the same time.
Guitar tuners are also manufactured in a variety of sizes. Some are small enough for a musician to carry with them in a pocket or clip on the neck of the guitar. Others, most often used by professional musicians or piano tuners, can be up to 19 inches in size.
New technology has made it possible for musicians to also tune on-line or through their phones. This type of tuning, however, is done by the player’s perception of the sound. These methods do not always provide an accurate pitch. This is why professional guitar tuners are often the tuner of choice.
