Left-handed guitars are designed for left-handed guitar players. However, not all left-handed guitar players play left-handed guitars. For the most part, they look just like right-handed guitars, only they are constructed with a few design components that make left-handed playing easier.
The body of a left-handed guitar is located just under the high E string—opposite of the side that the cutaway is on with a right-handed guitar. Also, the neck is located on the right side of the player in a left-handed guitar. The tuners on a left-handed guitar are also located opposite of where the tuners are located on a right-handed guitar. The most noticeable difference, however, is the fact that a left-handed guitar is strung “upside-down.” The low E is on the top of the neck and the high E is on the bottom of the neck. This makes playing easier for left-handed guitarists.
Some left-handed players, like the legendary Jimi Hendrix, chose to restring a right-handed guitar in reverse instead of using a left-handed guitar. However, this method has a negative effect on the intonation of the instrument. With both the right-handed and left-handed guitar, the saddle is angled, which makes the bass strings slightly longer than the treble strings to improve the intonation. By reversing the strings, the intonation improvement is also reversed. This is what gives left-handed guitars such an advantage for most left-handed players.
